George Bowers Grocery - Here Again!

before

Last Saturday we re-launched George Bowers Grocery to elbow-to-elbow crowds. The response from the community continues to be very encouraging. (Thank you, Newtown/Staunton!) Now we start work really dialing it in so that the store can find it’s place in the community again. Here’s to shopping local!

Meanwhile… prep work continues at Jefferson. We have our drawings and bids completed but now we start what could become the byzantine process of historic credits and historic appropriateness evaluation. We plan to keep the house as close to the original plans as possible, with just a few exceptions. For example, we’d like to add two bathrooms. That might not fly for tax credits but I think would be crucial for re-sale potential as well as my own preference (modern buyers somewhat spoiled with bathrooms and closets).

So we’ll see what passes inspection and what does not. The next presentation slot in front of the historical board is at the end of December.

A big part of “Phase 1″ will be reconstructing the stone wall that surrounds the property. It was improperly patched over the years with dire effects. So now the entire thing needs to be taken apart, all the stones numbered, and built again.

It may be one of several “sticker shock” moments in the coming year.

Hopefully we can get right to work on it!
