It’s Raining Whiskey

garden, people & places

Since we’re waiting for shutter parts we turned our attentions to other projects. We picked up these flower boxes at a yard sale and are painting them white.

Yard-wise, I ripped out some, but not all, the overgrowth and planted two trees my mother brought us (a smoke tree and burning bush).

The biggest project, however, is our new rain barrel! We wanted a wooden rain barrel instead of a plastic one because we felt it would be a practical design element. It will be particularly handy for watering the shade garden in the back.

You can buy wooden rain barrels pre-made but they cost ~$250+shipping. So when we saw an old Kentucky whiskey barrel at the bottom-barrel price of $35, we jumped on it. (Thanks, Verona Antiques!)

That’s when having a tub in your yard comes in handy. The barrel needs to be soaked in water long enough to swell and seal shut. So, Brian dug out our tub, filled it with water, and submerged the hooch container the best he could. (I tried to get him to get up on it barefoot and roll it around, no luck.) We both laughed when he drilled an opening for the gutter water, and it smelled like whiskey. The real deal!

It still needs to cure a bit longer before it holds water properly. Brian will be adding a tap and screen on the hole. It’s cleverly leveled so that water runs right into it. Now we just need some more heavy rains…!
